The Pilot Project

This will be “ Greening Kurland Village”. The central focus of this work will involve the planting of indigenous trees and shrubs along the road verges and amongst the villagers dwellings. New green open spaces that are welcoming and relaxing will be created within the village. A further aim is to plant lemon trees in the backyards of all dwellings and to establish a central community organic food growing garden where, amongst other things, plants such as garlic and ginger will be grown for free distribution to household kitchens and the AIDS clinic. It is widely known that these natural organically grown foods contribute towards strengthening the immune system against the AIDS virus and other diseases.

Trees, plants and equipment for the project are being donated by local nurseries and businesses. The project also has its own nursery where trees and plants of various kinds are being propagated for distribution in the village. This greening initiative will in time expand into other local village communities.

NEWSFLASH!!!
Volunteers needed to join Villagers on “Greening Kurland Village”,
South Africa

“Greening Kurland Village” is a unique project taking place in the Bitou Municipality, right in the heart of the Garden Route. It represents a great opportunity for a group of volunteers to be involved in this unusual and enterprising South African initiative. Volunteers on this project work side by side with the project leaders and local villagers. The villagers extend a warm welcome to the volunteers with whom they openly share their way of life and traditional South African customs.

The broad goal of the Barefoot University Foundation is the upliftment of the quality of life for the local residents of materially disadvantaged rural villages . By moving directly into the day to day work rhythm, we discover ways of working effectively within the village communities. This is a cooperative enterprise with personal growth and enrichment for all involved. It is an exciting opportunity for hands-on grassroots work, developing relationships with the local people… children, youths, adults and the elderly. Everyone is welcome to join in by rolling up sleeves, pulling on gumboots and getting stuck in!

Our volunteers need to be adventurous, spontaneous, flexible, hardworking nature lovers with a passion for social interaction and community building as a way of life! If you meet these criteria, please do not hesitate to apply immediately.

Now that you have the gist of it, here are the options we offer you:

  • To do volunteer work in a traditional South African community
  • To garden within the landscape of a local rural village
  • To teach or assist in local creches and schools (Extra costs may apply)
  • To practise medical work at local clinics (Extra costs via WWISA)
  • To offer counselling or care giving (Extra costs may apply)
  • To cook and bake as part of a catering team
  • To assist in setting up small businesses related to a recycling system
  • To participate in local environmental or wildlife projects

All the projects listed are linked with other local organisations such as WWISA and Born in Africa. The extra cost may apply depending on the project for which sign up and the organisation involved in running the project.
